At the 2025 Leishan Miao New Year parade, Miao girls in stunning traditional outfits turned the old streets into a moving runway. With silver crowns on their heads, silver collars around their necks, and beautifully embroidered dresses, they perfectly embodied the traditional saying:“A girl is not a girl without silver and flowers.”
Each girl’s silver jewelry set is one of a kind. Heavy silver crowns weighing several kilos, finely carved necklaces, lucky silver locks, and jingling waist chains—every piece takes craftsmen months of delicate work.
Miao silver work has a history of more than 600 years. It takes about 30 steps—melting, hammering, engraving, welding, polishing, and more. A full set of silver jewelry covers the body from head to toe, and a single silver headdress can weigh four to five kilos.
Beyond the dazzling silver, the parade also featured a special“Yang Ousang”goddess formation. One hundred Miao girls dressed in the iconic“Hundred-bird Dress,”holding rice stalks and spindles, danced gracefully to bring a legendary goddess from Miao mythology to life. The performance not only showcased the beauty of Miao clothing, but also celebrated the wisdom and hard-working spirit of Miao women.
